Jock Talk is back from our bye this week. It may seem like we took several bye weeks this season, and that is because we did. Unlike Oregon (New Mexico, Portland State), Auburn (Louisiana-Monroe, Chattanooga), and Boise State (Wyoming, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Idaho, Utah State), we decided to fill our schedule with literal bye weeks instead of several figurative byes (James Madison not included).
Lets recap what we missed:
College football provided weeks of monotony as very few marquee games were scheduled and few upsets occurred. Heisman contenders played like Heisman contenders. The only remarkable news made by college football in recent weeks was of course, the Cam Newton accusations. We have covered his recent misfortunes extensively on the podcasts and the NCAA has ruled Cam eligible for the SEC Championship game. Oklahoma State was a home win away from the Big 12 Title game and a rematch with Nebraska, but Oklahoma State couldn't handle the aerial assault of Landry Jones an OU.
In the NFL, Peyton Manning has lost his form and Mike Vick has performed so well I offered him an apology during a recent podcast. Dallas and Minnesota were finally able to shed their dead-weight coaches. While the Vikings ownership had fueled speculation that Childress was on the chopping block, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had claimed coach Wade Phillips' job was safe for the season just weeks before. Phillip Rivers has continued his record setting pace and is my MVP favorite to date.
In the "Association", the mighty Lakers have lost 4 in a row and are no longer the undisputed top team in the NBA. The Hornets and Spurs have been surprisingly dominant, while the Heat have been and utter disappointment. The Thunder, despite injuries to several key players, are ahead of last years record thanks to an MVP caliber first quarter of the season by Russel Westbrook. The Thunder now have two of the best fifteen players in basketball surrounded by a young core.
I think the NHL started, we will research this before our next podcast.
