Sweet 16 is Set

With the first weekend in the books, lets take a look at the Sweet 16 and recap some of the action.

We have an 12 seeds, two 11s and a 10 in the Sweet 16 this year, but the only upset I want to talk about is Morehead State over Louisville and Rick Pitino.  Here at Jock Talk, we suggest the Eagles change their name to Toomuchhead State.  After defeating Head State in the opening weekend of 2006, Pitino couldn't handle Morehead.  Morehead was lucky to escape Pitino's late charge to escape with a win.  Unfortunately the Eagles were throttled in their second game.

In other notable happenings, Pitt and it's Predator-like center were defeated by Butler, becoming the first 1 seed eliminated from the tournament.  Of the record 11 teams from the Big East conference that started the tournament, only 2 remain.  Both are underdogs in there next games as 11 seed Marquette face 2 seed UNC and 3 seed UConn face 2 seed SDSU.  I expect Kemba Walker to carry UConn to a victory, but am not as hopeful for Marquette.

Kansas is the lone Big 12 team remaining while Arizona is the lone PAC 10 team still alive.  I saw both this weekend in Tulsa.  Kansas looks poised to overpower straight to the Final Four.  They are tremendously balanced and support a deep bench.  Arizona, on the other hand, is a 1-man team.  Derrick Williams is an animal, and should be a top-5 pick in this years draft.  The Wildcats faced Memphis in the opening round, and the crowd was easily 70-30 pro-Memphis.  Down 2 with 0:03 left, the Tigers were able to get an offensive rebound and go up for a rebound.  The crowd was going crazy.  Out of nowhere, Williams ferociously blocked the shot and flattened the Memphis player.  The crowd went dead silent in an instant.  Williams slid over to help and blocked the shot so quickly it was as if the Memphis fans weren't sure what they had seen.  Despite the aid some shoddy refereeing, Williams was able to complete a 3-point play in the closing seconds to push 'Zona past Texas in their second game.
